“[Science] is more than a school subject, or the periodic table, or the properties of waves. It is an approach to the world, a critical way to understand and explore and engage with the world, and then have the capacity to change that world…”

President Barack Obama, March 23, 2015

Today, most of us got up early, headed to our local polling site, and cast our ballots for the next President of the United States. But it’s not just election day — it’s also National STEM Day! So, after you cast your vote, you can support our country’s future by making a donation to one of the many great organization raising funds for STEM education on Mightycause!

Wondering what “STEM” is and why it’s important? “STEM” stands from Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. STEM professionals are innovators. They’re the people who conceptualize and create the latest technology, build the websites and apps we come to consider a vital part of our daily lives, build and maintain the infrastructure of everything from our banks to national security, work to find new treatments for diseases, and keep our country moving forward. STEM professionals are software developers, mechanical and civil engineers, medical scientists and researchers, environmental scientists, statisticians, chemists and economists. STEM careers are only expected to grow as our country progresses — and that’s why it’s vital that we provide STEM education to our nation’s youth.

President Obama has made STEM an education a vital part of his plan for the Department of Education. Check out the White House’s all-hands-on-deck plan for STEM education.

STEM education is also important to all of us as at Mightycause — as a technology company, we want to see more people, young and old, learn the skills they need to get into the STEM field. Our staff is comprised of people with all kinds of skill sets, from coders, to designers, to data analysts. Without STEM education, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do!

So, on this election day, we’d like to show some love to some great STEM education fundraisers on Mightycause. Check them out:

Code2College #LaunchALeader: This campaign aims to provide STEM education to high school students in Central Texas. They’re exceeded their $25,000 goal… but you can still donate to support their program!

Joseph James Morelli Scholarship Fund: This Fund was started by the Park City Community Foundation in honor of Joseph James Morelli, who learned he was severely dyslexic in high school and went on to find academic success at Montana State University. Joseph sadly passed away at age 20, but this memorial fund aims to help other children with learning disabilities pursue STEM education and careers.

AAUW Big Bear Trek for Big Bear Girls: This awesome fundraiser is part of our Give Big San Bernardino County giving day — it funds sending girls to a weeklong summer camp called Tech Trek to encourage their interest and education in STEM!

TechBridge Girls: This is an after-school STEM program in Oakland, Ca. that provides STEM education and encouragement to girls in underserved communities.

These are just a handful of the fundraisers on Mightycause — check out all of the organizations and fundraisers in our Science, Business and Technology category!
