Washington Gives is an online giving platform that helps individuals, groups, and businesses to discover and donate to nonprofits headquartered or serving Washington State. Each year Washington Gives hosts two fundraising campaigns: GiveBIG and #GivingTuesday. GiveBIG is a 48 hour giving campaign every Spring, and #GivingTuesday aligns with the global movement of generosity the Tuesday after Thanksgiving.

Washington Gives is powered by 501 Commons, a 501c3 charitable organization that provides services to amplify the strengths of the nonprofit sector. GiveBIG was started by the Seattle Foundation in 2011 and transferred to 501 Commons in 2018. Since its inception, nonprofits have raised over $175 million!

Transitioning to Mightycause 

In 2021, after 3 years of hosting the campaign, the 501 Commons team conducted a thorough review of online fundraising platforms in the marketplace and made the decision to migrate their year-round giving platform to Mightycause. In partnership with 501 Commons, the Mightycause team worked to streamline the platform transition process for nonprofits and donors by migrating and importing past donation history, profile page information, and more. This allowed nonprofits to quickly and easily onboard the new platform just a few months before the biggest giving campaign of the year and get set up for success.

The 2022 Give Big campaign represented a strong launch on the new platform, and presented nonprofits with many ways to participate and engage their donor base. Nonprofits could host a traditional fundraising campaign to solicit donations, activate ambassadors to start peer-to-peer fundraisers on their behalf, and post volunteer and in-person events

New for 2022, the 501 Commons team took advantage of a powerful new feature on the Mightycause platform and implemented a new strategy to increase donor retention and to make it even easier for donors to repeat past donations. With two targeted emails, GiveBIG prompted donors to “give again” via a quick link to refill their shopping cart, and encouraged previous donors to consider increasing their impact.  These email campaigns drove significant impact for the campaign, helping raise over $900,000 for participating nonprofits. This strategy leans into one of the hallmarks of the Washington Gives platform, which is building a donor community that uses the platform to search, discover, and support multiple nonprofits.

What’s Next

Now that the GiveBIG 2022 campaign is complete, the Washington Gives platform transitions to connecting donors and nonprofits all year long. Participating nonprofits have access to a full suite of fundraising tools year round, from best-in-class peer-to-peer fundraising campaigns, an embeddable donation widget, volunteer management tools, comprehensive matching grants, recurring donation management, integrations, and much more.
